The province of Girona, is situated in the extreme northeast part of the Iberian Peninsula in Catalonia and is made up of 8 counties.
On one flank, the Cerdanya, Garrotxa and Ripollès are the three counties in the Pirineu de Girona (Pyrenees), where one can visit typical mountain towns and villages with mediaeval buildings. On another flank, the Costa Brava includes the Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Gironès, Pla de l’Estany and Selva counties. The diversity of landscape has shaped the different town typologies in this part of the region.
The Mediterranean is just one aspect of the breathtakingly sensual Costa Brava-Pirineu de Girona tandem. The other aspect is the Girona Pyrenees, the authentic cradle of the Catalan nation where man has struggled for centuries against a background of rugged nature. The striking features and implacable presence of these snow-covered peaks of over two thousand metres sculpt the entire landscape with their imposing granite heights and peaceful valleys and plains.
In keeping with its geographical diversity, there are numerous climates and microclimates in the area, which depend on the altitude and proximity to the sea. Overall, it could be said that the area enjoys a warm, gentle, Mediterranean type climate, characterised by hot, dry summers and moderate winters.
