Gerona Airport is situated aproximately 12 kms south of Gerona. It is well connected to the Costa Brava resorts including Blanes, Lloret de Mar or Estartit and is only a 40 minute drive from the French border. As Gerona Airport is situated on the Costa Brava, it is an important hub for travellers in the north eastern part of Spain. It is a major hub for the low cost airline Ryanair who is the most important budget airline for flights to and from Gerona Airport, mainly from the United Kingdom and Ireland. There are more than 15 UK airports from where you can fly to Gerona and from Ireland you can fly to Gerona from Dublin and Shannon.

Car hire at Gerona Airport is a perfect way to get around. There are very good roads which connect Gerona Airport to all major tourist destinations on the Costa Brava and the toll motorway which connects the airport with France. The majority of the car hire desks which include Avis, Europcar, Aurigacrown, Goldcar, Hertz and National Atesa can easily be found when you exit the baggage reclaim area. Barcelona is only a one hour drive away and the beautiful coastal towns of Palamos, Lloret de Mar, Blanes and Tossa de Mar are all within a 30 minute drive. When you are returning to Gerona Airport to drop off your rental all you have to do is follow the car hire return signs that will take you straight into the car hire car parks just around the front of the airport terminal.

You will find a tourist information desk with plenty of details on the area and in particular Girona in the connecting walkway between arrivals and departures. The taxi rank is located outside the terminal building, not far from the bus stops which are just 50 metres down the road.

Bus services at Gerona Airport have been increased due to the fact, that many people use Gerona Airport as an alternative airport for Barcelona Airport. The high demand from passengers wanting to get into the city centre of Barcelona which is a journey of just over an hour depending on traffic is the main reason for the increase and bus timetables tend to coincide with departures and arrivals at Girona airport.

When the Christmas season draws near, households traditionally set aside somewhere in the house to recreate, on a smaller scale, Christmas Eve in Bethlehem. Little figures, moss-covered mounds and tinfoil rivers are used to make the traditional cribs. In some towns and villages, however, these Nativity scenes come out onto the streets, life-size, to convey the essence of these festivities.

Though these Living Nativity Scenes are intended as Yuletide representations of the gospels, they are also a good way of getting to know every corner of the villages of Girona. Take advantage of the coming of the evening, when the cribs are lit up, to delve into a tradition that has been kept up from generation to generation.

The leading characters, dressed up in period clothes, take their places in meticulously decorated stage-sets portraying traditional, historical and biblical scenes. The census of the Jews, the difficulties encountered by Joseph and Mary as they looked for somewhere to stay, the Nativity and the coming of the Three Wise Men are among the many portrayals you will be able to witness.

A signposted circuit will take you all around these various scenes, from stage to stage. See for yourself how the stage sets blend in with their surroundings to spectacular effect – sometimes in old medieval districts and other times outside the villages, amid nature. In some of these stagings, an off-stage voice will fill you in on the historical context and tell you about the prophesies announcing the coming of the Messiah. In others, you will be astonished by such spectacular special effects as the flight of an angel announcing the Birth.

There are many towns and villages in Girona province that have their own Living Nativity Scene, some with longer traditions behind them than others, but all with a charm of their own. Most villages are very well connected by public transport, but it is certainly more convenient to travel with your own car. If you’re a tourist then we advise to rent a car. You will find car hire companies in the most important towns of Girona, and if you arrive by plane at Gerona airport you can book car hire Girona on the internet, so you are sure that your rental car is waiting for you when you arrive at Girona airport. You will find these cribs in Amer, Castell d’Aro, Bàscara, Fontcoberta, Brunyola, Joanetes, Santa Pau, Pals, Avinyonet de Puigventós, Bescanó, Flaçà, Llers, Peralada, Puigcerdà, Riudaura, Santa Cristina d’Aro, Celrà, Tossa de Mar, Vilavenut and Navata.

The city of Girona, capital of the spanish province with the same name (also written as Gerona) is part of Catalonia, one of the 17 autonomous regions that comprise Spain.

Gerona the has a rich, detailed, and dramatic history. The first inhabitants of the area were the Iberians. Then came the Romans who built a fortification there, which was named Gerunda. After having been occupied by a number of cultures, Girona finally fell under control by the Holy Roman Empire. In the 12 th century, the Jewish community flourished in Girona , and a major Kabbalistic school was built. However, the Catholic Kings drove the Jews away from Spain in 1492. Later on, in the 17 th to 18 th century, Girona fell under siege by the French, and it was conquered by Napoleon in 1809. The walls of the city were destroyed in the 19 th century. Today, the city is a rich heritage site full of historic and cultural beauty.

Some of the most interesting places to visit are the cathedral and the Jewish Quarter. The Cathedral is one of Girona ‘s grandest churches, the cathedral was built between the 11 th and 17 th centuries AD. The church’s structure integrates a number of architectural styles that were built at various points in history. The features of the original Roman building are preserved, such as a cloister and tower of Charlemagne. The nave of the church is the widest arched span in the whole world.

The Jewish Quarter, or the Call is the best preserved in all of Catalonia and certainly the most remarkable in Spain. The narrow and winding alleyways and lanes snake around medieval stone buildings that once housed the Jewish community in Girona . The Jews’ influence and teachings were far-reaching throughout Europe.

The province of Girona, is situated in the extreme northeast part of the Iberian Peninsula in Catalonia and is made up of 8 counties.

On one flank, the Cerdanya, Garrotxa and Ripollès are the three counties in the Pirineu de Girona (Pyrenees), where one can visit typical mountain towns and villages with mediaeval buildings. On another flank, the Costa Brava includes the Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Gironès, Pla de l’Estany and Selva counties. The diversity of landscape has shaped the different town typologies in this part of the region.

The Mediterranean is just one aspect of the breathtakingly sensual Costa Brava-Pirineu de Girona tandem. The other aspect is the Girona Pyrenees, the authentic cradle of the Catalan nation where man has struggled for centuries against a background of rugged nature. The striking features and implacable presence of these snow-covered peaks of over two thousand metres sculpt the entire landscape with their imposing granite heights and peaceful valleys and plains.

In keeping with its geographical diversity, there are numerous climates and microclimates in the area, which depend on the altitude and proximity to the sea. Overall, it could be said that the area enjoys a warm, gentle, Mediterranean type climate, characterised by hot, dry summers and moderate winters.
